Other than sending the emissary to ask for a ceasefire, you can assassinate the Pope AFTER you get excommunicated. (The ceasefire order won't cancel when the Pope dies, but the excommunication order will.) Your Pope rating will drop all the way to the bottom but hey - if you can kill one Pope, you can kill them all.
Well, I play on VH/VH and as Scotland this is my strategy. You want to take the rebel settlements closest to England ASAP (York and Caernarvon), otherwise England will grab 'em up. You can take Prince Edward and a unit of border horse and take York turn 1, moving everything else towards Caernarvon. Another thing you probably want to do ASAP is

As fabulous a game as Medieval 2 is, the majority of its (absolutely worthwhile) improvements and changes are on the subtle side. Earlier Total Wars Rome and Medieval 1 both felt like significant
Sure. I just finished a 170+ campaign in Medieval 2. The main staple of Medieval 2 is the moddability of the game and the insane amount of total conversion mods there are. That said, dont go judging the game to modern standards, it is after all some 16 years old by now.
